Backbone Radio is based on Apple's QuickTime and MPEG-4 AAC, the worldwide streaming standard.
Your audience is now anyone who can use iTunes, and that includes everybody who runs Windows or Mac OS.

Backbone Radio Streaming -- Highest quality, worldwide standard
Backbone provides all the streaming server hardware, server software, streaming bandwidth and support to transmit your station's programs to your worldwide listening audience. Our advanced streaming server software is built upon the Apple QuickTime standard, which comprises the MPEG-4 worldwide standard. It incorporates the AAC advanced audio codec, delivering superior audio fidelity at bandwidths and storage sizes that are dramatically more efficient than the older mp3 technologies. Your audience can listen with their iTunes and/or QuickTime players and browser plug-ins, available to everyone using Windows and Mac OS computers. That means that with your Backbone-hosted station, you have access to the widest based cross-platform listener base available. Everyone can hear your station and enjoy your music and message.
In addition, your Backbone-hosted radio station gives you the multi-dimensional presence of audio, plus text annotation showing your listeners all the information about your station, your music's title, artist, album name, and copyright, as well as displaying the album cover art, as supplied by you or by the iTunes Store. Plus, your listeners can click on your station's QuickTime player window, which then automatically launches their iTunes player, taking them to that song in the iTunes store, where they can purchase that song, all without interrupting your station's audio program. If your station signs up as an iTunes affiliate, you can automatically earn revenues from Apple for each song purchased by your audience. This power is available only through Backbone-hosted stations.
